The Right Coco Coir Blend for Every Crop Stage (With Ratios)

After years of field feedback, one thing is clear: the blend matters more than people think.

Many growers start with good-quality coco coir and still find themselves adjusting irrigation or fertigation mid-season. Often, the reason isn't the inputs, it's how the media is structured.

Different crops ask very different things from the root zone.

Seedlings and Young Plants: 100% Coco Peat

Roots need moisture without resistance.

That's why many growers use 100% coco peat (fine pith) at this stage, it holds water evenly and stays gentle on early root growth.

Greenhouse Vegetables: 70% Peat + 30% Coco Hush Chips

Tomato, capsicum and cucumber need balance above all else.

A blend of 70% coco peat + 30% Coco Hush Chips helps maintain steady moisture while allowing air to move freely around the roots.

Fruit Trees and Container Shrubs: 60% Chips + 20% Peat + 20% Sand/Perlite

Time becomes the challenge with longer crop cycles.

They need stronger drainage and structure, which is why growers often work with 60% Coco Hush Chips + 20% coco peat + 20% sand or perlite.

Orchids and Indoor Tropical: 2 Parts Peat: 1 Part Chips

Roots need space above all else.

A mix of 2 parts coco peat: 1 part Coco Hush Chips, with added bark or perlite, promotes a chunky, breathable medium that doesn't compact.

The Step Growers Rarely Skip: Preparation

Across all systems, one step experienced growers rarely skip is preparation.

Pro tip:

• Always buffer your coco media with calcium and magnesium before planting

• Never skip EC and pH testing

• A common working range many growers aim for is pH 5.5–6.5 and EC 1.0–2.0 mS/cm
